Frequently asked questions about glazing packers

How to install glazing packers?

Colorful, cheerful, and usually a bit playful - This is what it looks like when you have a box full of glazing packers. Different colors, several sizes, and the widths of the glazing packers are not always identical. Time to look again at what is so important in glazing packers.
A window or other component to be placed in position. A folding rule. A drawing showing the thickness of the component you want to install. An order form, a measurement sheet or a product description.

Frequently asked questions about glazing packers

In order to order the right glazing packer, you need to know, among other things, how thick or wide your component to be installed is. Depending on this, the width of the glazing packer is determined. Basically, the frame and the thickness of the planned glass or glass composite determine the glazing packer to be used. According to them, both the thickness and the width of the required blocks are determined. The recommended material is weather-resistant, dimensionally stable, load-bearing and impact-absorbing. In the past, hardwood was used. Today, polypropylene is the first choice.
For example, if you have a window pane that is 44 mm, the block must have at least this width and should rather protrude. Full support of the component is recommended. A glazing packer should not be too small in size and then laid, for example, obliquely under the installed unit.
Here it depends very much on the space. It is always recommended to have a thicker packer that is balanced with thinner ones. So it does not hurt to order a thicker version and add one or two thinner blocks. That way you are prepared for any situation. A good value is one-third of the height of the glass rebate. However, it is better not to go below 5 millimeters, to avoid the adhesion of water droplets. As a rule, thicker packers are better, which can then be compensated with thinner ones.
In the glass and window industry, all parties involved were able to agree on a common standard, which is good otherwise everyone would have a different color for a different size. In the hectic daily routine, in window production or assembly, there is usually no time for searching. So the different thicknesses were assigned fixed colors. 1mm thickness - white 2mm thickness - blue 3mm thickness - red 4mm thickness - yellow 5mm thickness - green 6mm thickness - black
Our PP glazing packers are always 100 mm long. Special lengths like glazing packers and glass blocks made of impregnated wood are available in 80 mm length. Here, however, there are also special lengths that can be manufactured, which, however, are only used in very special cases.
The difference lies in the function within the glass-frame composite and shows the importance of weight absorption. Technically on the glazing packers, there is no difference. This means that the same glazing packers is used as a supporting or spacer block. Only their function in the frame determines the difference.
As a rule, the glazing packer are inserted one block length away from the corners of the glass pane. So, for example, in the lower frame about 100 millimeters each from the horizontal elements inward. On the other frame elements accordingly. You can use another glazing packer for positioning.
The arrangement of glazing packers in the frame depends on the planned movement of the frame. In the case of fixed windows, it is usually sufficient to use two supporting packers as a support on the lower frame and one spacer packers in the upper part of each side strut. Glazing packers are to be inserted one block length away from the corners of the glass pane. For movable windows and doors, the position of the support and spacer blocks depends on the weight distribution.
First, glazing packers must be inserted into the underside of the frame. Then the pane or glazing compound is placed on them in the center. For fine alignment, a blocking trowel (also called blocking lever or glazing trowel) is very useful, with which you can easily lever out the glass and position it precisely. Once the pane is perfectly seated at the bottom, the other support packers or the required glazing packers are inserted. Finally, the frame is closed and the seals can be pulled in.
